FIVE-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN


OVERVIEW

With robust skills and technical training programs and a well-respected four-year university transfer curriculum, Clackamas Community College (CCC) contributes to an educated and engaged population in a service district of over 350,000. In 2020, they decided to refresh and refocus their strategy on the mission they had always valued and proudly delivered: offering high-quality student and community learning to their extensive and diverse district. To that end, they hired Coraggio Group to help guide them through a strategic planning process that would identify high- impact focus areas for action and unify the college, fostering lasting relationships and a sense of connection and collaboration. The result is a well-researched Insight Report, and a comprehensive 5-Year Strategic Plan to ensure the college continues to meet the changing needs of its district.

APPROACH

It was essential to CCC that transparency, inclusivity, and accessibility be at the core of the strategic planning process, values shared by Coraggio and honored in the extensive stakeholder outreach that kicked off the planning. More than 135 individuals shared input through interviews and focus groups, including community leaders, K-12 and university partners, elected local and regional officials, nonprofit and governmental agency partners, alums, foundation supporters, current and future students, and members of the CCC Board of Education. An online survey engaged another 501 individuals, and this combined outreach came together in the Insight Report that Coraggio developed to inform CCC’s strategic plan. Inclusion stretched beyond stakeholder outreach and continued through the entire planning process.

  • The Planning Team was made up of 17 individuals from across the college including full and part time faculty, classified and unclassified staff, administration, and students.

  • Priority Cohorts were also formed in each of the College’s five identified priority areas. Another 55 individuals from across the college were nominated or volunteered to join the cohorts, and together they developed the plan’s success measures and strategic actions.

With Coraggio’s partnership, CCC carried out an engaging and collaborative process, consistent with their values and their goals.

OUTCOMES

  • A comprehensive five-year plan with buy-in across the college that outlines priorities, indicators, and actions to guide CCC as they cultivate equitable, innovative, and responsive education for their service district.

  • Working together formed and strengthened relationships across the college, fostering a sense of alignment, connection, and commitment to the shared goals that were developed.

  • By bringing change management and leadership development principles directly into the process, the implementation teams—already launched and beginning work on the plan—are taking on the next steps in ensuring that CCC empowers individuals and strengthens their community well into the future.
